Five years ago Jamo launched its landmark Architectural series of CI speakers. Featuring our new ‘signature’ matte green finish these speakers took the Custom Installation market by storm. The intervening years have seen annual improvements in specifications, performance, additions and so forth but in recent times we knew that a major sea-change was soon going to be necessary.

Why? Because the company, the market, technology and customer expectations had all evolved. ‘Good enough isn’t a phrase we’re ever comfortable with,’ says Lasse Hald, General Manager, ‘We always need to be at the leading edge of the Custom Installation world.’

That’s why Jamo is launching three entirely new lines of CI speakers – the 800 Custom Series, the 600 Custom Series and the 400 Custom Series – designed 100 per cent in house, with drivers built to our exacting specifications and featuring all of the same key Jamo technologies that you will find in our domestic speakers (plus a couple of new technologies that you won’t).

‘We were determined to make these new models a showcase for Jamo’s loudspeaker expertise,’ says Mikael Ankersen, Jamo’s acoustic engineer, ‘and as such they had to incorporate all of the existing leading-edge acoustic technologies that we hold dear: WaveGuide, DTT (Decoupled Tweeter Technology), HCC (Hard Conical Cone), Centre Plugs... we’ve used them all.’
As mentioned above there are also some new key technologies in evidence here too, technologies that are of specific benefit when applied in custom installation applications.

One of the most significant ones is SoundAngle. As the name suggests this technology allows a speaker to be mounted at either high or low position by a screen without compromising intelligibility. That’s because with a SoundAngle-equipped speaker, the angle that sound leaves can be altered so that instead of firing out horizontally the output can be angled 30 degrees down in the vertical plane. This rather neat trick is achieved entirely electronically, rather than mechanically, by virtue of the addition of a high-quality crossover that can be brought into action at the flip of a switch.

‘Other competitors may have systems that perform a similar function but I can guarantee you that no other manufacturer will offer products incorporating SoundAngle at the sort of affordable price points that we aim to hit,’ says Lasse Hald,’ when it comes to value for money we’re confident that we will continue to remain in a league of our own.’

The other key defining point of the three new ranges is the fact that they have been voiced so that they can be regarded as being in-wall and in-ceiling complements to Jamo’s freestanding speaker ranges. ‘Specifiers and owners will now be able to mix and match Jamo’s freestanding and CI speakers, says Lasse Hald, General Manager at Jamo, ‘They’ll be able to do so safe in the knowledge that they know their chosen products will work in harmony with each other.’

And for good reason. The drivers used in the 600 Custom Series speakers, for instance, are exactly the same ones that you’ll find the C 600 series freestanding speakers. Ditto for the 800 Custom series which employs the same woofers and tweeters used in its freestanding brethren.

Navigating the different options in the two ranges will also be a lot easier now, thanks to a logical naming system that can be relatively easily decoded. For instance, in-wall speakers are designated IW, in ceiling speakers are IC. The numbers that follow will also signify key information. For instance an IW 625 LCR will sport 2 x 140mm/5½in drivers while an IW 608 will have a single 203mm/8in driver.

‘When it comes to speed of installation, the standard of service we’re going to give to installers and real-world delivery times, ‘concludes Lasse Hald, ’we think our new ranges will put us top of the game.

‘Factor in the best audio performance you’ll encounter in the Custom Installation segment and you can see why we’re confident all three of our new Custom Installation speaker lines will prove compelling propositions.’’

Kevlar might be better known as the stuff that police forces use in their bullet-proof vests but in Jamo’s world it is famed as the ultra-light material employed in the drive units of its new 400 Custom Installation Series.

Not that you’ll see those units in practice. With paintable grilles supplied as standard you’ll only notice these speakers if you really want to. The series is designed for maximum versatility and compatibility but at a surprisingly competitive price. From a sonic point of view they make a great match for speakers from Jamo’s C 400 freestanding loudspeaker series, a key factor that expands the installation possibilities a hundredfold.

Comprising seven models in total – two LCR models (one 2-way in-wall, one 3-way in-ceiling), two in-wall models (using Jamo’s clever SoundAngle technology), and three in-ceiling models with 6/8/10in bass drive units, the 400 Custom Series covers a lot of bases as far as installers are concerned.

Those technologies aren’t just there to look pretty on the spec sheet either. All have been employed because individually they improve a key performance aspect: collectively, they deliver top notch sound quality from low-profile speakers that you will struggle to locate in a room if properly installed.

SoundAngle, for instance, allows speakers to be mounted high up in room yet be able to direct sound down 30 degrees from the horizontal via a crossover. Then there are the pivoting titanium DTT (Decoupled Tweeter Technology) tweeters, employed to great effect on all the 400 Custom Series models.

The unique suspension system used in the DTT tweeters (which are used throughout the series) means that high frequencies are less affected by resonances from drywall ceilings... it’s effectively a shock absorber that allows, cleaner, less distorted high frequencies to be heard in the listening room. Switchable 4-8 Ohm impedance also allows better matching to a wider range of amplifiers.

While the models in Jamo’s 600 and 800 Custom install speaker series’ might offer superior ultimate audio quality the 400 Custom Series carves itself out a place in the market and in installers’ hearts by offering unparalleled versatility at an astonishingly low price level.
